There are many ways in which the world of the newspaper reporter or journalist differs widely from the world of freelance writer. As a newspaper reporter, he does not work at his own pace. Rather, he usually work conventional working hours, or sometimes longer. He does not choose his own subjects but rather are given specific assignments by an editor to carry out. Writing News Lead

The short-story writer begins his story with minor facts until he reaches the climax. He would withhold the most important information until the end of the story. While the news reporter does not organize his stories in the same way. Because newspaper readers want the more important information first, the news reporter begins with the climax. Then as he discloses the most important information, he works away from climax to the lesser facts.

The first and most important paragraph of the news story is called lead. Readers will normally judge a story on newspaper by its lead. If it does not grab their attention, they will not read on. It summarizes the contents of the story and conveys its mood and a sense of urgency.

And the most common guideline is that a news writer should go out and gather facts, do his research and interview people if needed before he writes his news story. This is also practiced by bloggers and other freelance writers - they write their article stories supported with facts.

In hard news story, the term interpretive news may suggest to a contradiction in terms. Traditionally, news is thought of as objective, with interpretation of the news sent off to the editorials. But recently most journalists have come to believe that absolute objectivity is impossible to achieve. No matter how unbiased a reporter attempts to be, everything he perceives and writes is seen through his own eyes. Every reporter decides to include certain aspects of a story and exclude others, thus interpreting the event.
