The Ability to Analyze an Incident is The Basis for a Column, News Item and Short Story

As you aspire to be a writer you should view life itself as a writer would. All experiences, both your own and other people’s whether happy, sad, frustrating or tragic, should be seen and examined as potential material for you to use. This is very important not only for writers but also for students who plan to be novelists or short story writers. It is valuable to note down these experiences, good and bad and all the facets of human emotions for possible future use.
One journalist told me that he could guarantee to come up with at least three ideas for his newspaper’s gossip column merely by walking down the town’s main street. He had trained himself, he said, to make a mental note of what the untrained observer would miss.
In order to make the most use of what is happening around you, you should try to use all your senses all the time. Nothing should escape your keen observation and scrutiny. You should become an enquiring person. Ask yourself questions about things are being done, the background to events, the circumstances that surround them and the reaction of both those involved and those merely observing. There are ideas for stories, articles and news items all around, if only you can recognize them.
What is important is the ability to analyze an incident in order to use it as the basis for an article, news item or short story.

Notebook is The Easiest to Use Way of Getting The Ideas Down Safely

For making notes when out and about, tape recorders and mobile phones will work or when an idea occurs that you want to record quickly but aside from them notebooks are also useful for this purpose. All writers should carry a notebook and pen or pencil wherever they go. Gordon Pemberton explains this so well in his handbook How to Write Your Textbook.
He said: “The human mind is a complicated mechanism, with plenty of anomalies. On the one hand it can come up with a really bright idea when you are not consciously searching for one. On the other hand it can forget ideas in a mtter of seconds. A writer’s lament is often, ‘It was a great idea that came to me and now I have forgotten what it was.’
I use a hard-backed notebook because I can write in it anywhere wiothout needing anything to rest it on. A very apt title for one of my books came into my mind some years ago when I was in the middle of a filed of tall rhubarb, trying to recover my son’s kit. I stopped immdediately, took out the notebook and wrote it down, much to the puzzlement of several onlookers. But, if you don’t do this kind of thing, you may lose a good idea.”
Such experiences as this are quite common for writers. So, always have your notebook handy – even if it does make a small bulge in your pocket or handbag! You should also keep notebooks or files for your writing ideas and for any pieces of incidental writing you do. You never know when you may be able to use them. Whenever an idea comes to you for an article, story or plot – write it down.

Cuttings are Useful in Future Writing

Most writers have a cuttings file. Cuttings are items clipped from newspapers and magazinesand retained for their factual usefulness in future writing. Look for relevant, amusing orunusual items that tie-up with subjects which interest you. File them under their respective headings. They can be used in addition to books on the subjects.
When an idea occurs to you for an article you can take out your relevant collection of cuttings. Sort through these, selecting the items which will make an interesting, readable article. Alternatively, sometimes by searching through a selection of cuttings several article ideas will occur. It is also a good idea for those of you who intend to write short stories or novels to clip out events concerning people or other subjects around which you might weave a story.
Naturally, you will only keep cutting of those subjects in which you have a special interest or are likely to write about. Otherwise, you would soon be inundated with paper as well as pending too much time on your cuttings. A simple method of making a cuttings file is to obtain a number of envelopes. A good size is 10×12 inches. Write the subject’s name on the top of the envelope. These can then be files in alphabetical order in a large box. As the collection of cuttings increases some of the subjects can be divided into their own sections.
Eventually a filing cabinet or several, may be needed to house your cuttings envelopes. With a little use, you will soon realize the importance of a good cuttings file to help you to produce a steady output of articles. If you find this method is not for you, then experiment to develop something that suits you and is more convenient. But do try it first – you don’t know how useful it is until you have tried it.
